For a chocolate fix, Main Sweets (Route 127 south, 207-371-2806) should do the trick. This small but ambitious new bakery has whoopie pies, chocolate lobsters, caramel nut chocolates, buttermilk doughnuts, fudge, brownies, breads, pies, and more....

I can no longer visit my sister in New Hampshire without bringing something from MainSweets. The chocolate covered cheeries are to die for....my sister's husband is a chef and is hooked on the fresh bread

When my husband opened up our cottage this spring he said to me "Howard took me to this new place on 127 and they have the best whoopie pies"...after a few visits there in July, I'd add they have the best Needhams too!

If you don't know what a whoopie pie is, you are missing out. It's a sandwich of two chocolate cookie/cakes filled with a vanilla cream and a classic Maine confection. You'll just have to travel to Georgetown to try the Needhams and get the confectioner's secret to the creamy texture - they are dark chocolates filled with a coconut cream.

Along Route 127 in Georgetown we saw a little place called MainSweets (207-371-2806). The sign said homemade candy, so, knowing the number of sweet teeth contained in the van, we stopped. I'm so glad we did. Patty and Charlie Mains greeted us at the door. They were just delightful.

They had a nice selection of baked goods, created there on the premises. Patty offered us each a Needham she had made herself. The kids marveled at the ingredients- how could potato, coconut and chocolate taste so good? I was reminded of my Grandmother Mattie Finnemore making Needhams in her farm kitchen.
If you're travelling down to Reid State Park, stop in and say hello to Patty and Charlie. They'd just love to see you.

I think I mentioneed two places in Georgetown. Five Islands Farm, which has an excellent selection of local cheeses, along with breads, meats, wines and other gourmet-ish goodies that will round out a meal at nearby Five Islands Lobster. Also MainsSweets for really fab chocolates, incuding authentic needhams, and cookies, brownies, fudge, etc. Next to MainsSweets is a little hole-in-the-wall sandwich place that had a goodly amount of Maine pickup trucks and delivery vans in front of it (always a good sign), but I can't remember the name.
